Charles "Chazz" Miller born in Detroit, Michigan June 14, 1963 I've always had a love for my community and believed that to give is truly to receive. In 2003 I created Public Art Workz! to inspire the hearts and minds of all humanity using the power of Public Art. With a bright smile and keen eye, paint-splattered pants, Chazz Miller looks to be exactly what he is -- an artist. And his work is making a big impact. From the inspirational murals that adorn the sides of many buildings in Old Redford, to his latest public art project -- the Birwood Wall -- Miller approaches each opportunity with tons of creative energy. Far from the brooding-artistic-type, Miller is outgoing, personable and eager to take on new projects. But he wasn't always so sure of himself. In high school Miller says he lacked direction but found his calling at Detroit's Crockett Vocational Center in the `80s. "I had a teacher who recognized my talent and believed in me," he said. "From there I got a four-year scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design." Miller spent four-and-a-half years in Ohio and began working while still in college -- painting commercial billboards. "My largest was 450 feet by 50 feet high on a shopping mall in Columbus." His love of big ideas and the outdoors would prove to be a perfect combination. After seven years in Ohio and a stint in California, Miller came back in 1995. In 2000, Miller assisted the Motor City Blight Busters on a project -- and that's where he met its founder -- John George. "It's really fate," Miller said. His personal project, Public Art Workz! (P.A.W.Z.) grew out of Blight Busters. Through this program, Miller conducts summer camps for 10- to 18-year-old kids. "Mainly P.A.W.Z. has been implementing realistic job skills as it pertains to the arts. Art is everything. We promote community art and education." That education involves everything from computer animation to crafts to community gardening -- and, of course, the painting. Miller has done about a dozen murals in the Old Redford area. "I use walls to tell the history of our community and culture. Heroes like Martin Luther King, Jr., murals about mentoring, community gardening -- they're really rooted in the things the community desires."
